Sorrells - Expert Wine Rooms

When people are visualising how they wish to present their persona and lifestyle via their homes, having a decent wine cellar is generally pretty near the top of the list. Whether it’s a small functional room with modest racking nestled into the corner of your hall, or a vast cellar with adjoining rooms suitable for hundreds of bottles of wine.

Sorrells, who build acclaimed and innovative bespoke wine rooms, are increasingly being asked to design and build not only rooms for storing wine, but to incorporate the storage into functional spaces that can be enjoyed by their clients on a daily basis. There has been a surge of cellars designed to function around specific living areas. These might be dining rooms, where visitors can choose the evening’s wine, or they may be designed to become an integral part of the kitchen. However, the overwhelmingly popular option is to have your wine room designed as part of your relaxing and chill-out areas.

Recently, Sorrells have been fulfilling clients’ briefs to design statement wine rooms displaying versatility and artistic flair, in addition to the cutting-edge technology which ensures that the wine is kept at the optimum temperature and humidity.

For Graham and Lisa Hawkins, wine is a shared interest and the couple’s cellar complements both their lifestyles. Graham, Lisa and their young daughter live in a 100-year-old house in Essex. Lisa particularly enjoys how the cellar enables her to enjoy a social life at home. “What’s great for me is that when Graham’s away, and it’s difficult to get childcare, I can have my girlfriends round,” she explains.

The couple had their own plans for the wine cellar. Sorrells enhanced and provided some additional ideas, making the room a more integral part of the house. “We weren’t after anything ostentatious but it was important for us to have it looking nice,” Because of the Hawkins’ love of entertaining it was vital that the space catered for this. “The room that’s been created has enhanced our lifestyle and made the whole wine tasting experience an event,” Graham adds.

The Cummings who moved into a 200 year old farmhouse a couple of years ago, have a collection of around 4,500 to 5,000 bottles strong, comprising wines for drinking and those for investment. The cellar even includes dedicated storage for Malcolm’s collection of over 500 single malt whisky bottles.

“We’ve made the most of our cellar, getting so much in but ensuring it feels spacious,” says Malcolm. It’s become one of Malcolm’s favourite rooms in the house. “I find it a relaxing environment, it’s a great de-stresser. Dinner guests love to explore the cellar and enjoy the ambience of pre-dinner drinks while soaking up that American White Oak aroma”.
