APERITIVO HOUR

Apéritif is a French word, which comes from the Latin aperire, meaning “to open.” Drunk before a meal, generally with small plates of hors d’oeuvres, aperitifs act as appetite-stimulating drinks, thought to ‘open’ the stomach. They make the palate receptive not only to the forthcoming epicurean delights, but also subsequent drinks.

Let’s look at some excellent aperitifs. As it’s National Portugal Day let’s start with Port. Port and Lemon was very popular during the period between WW1 and WW2, but fizzled out of popularity in the 60’s.

Now it’s back and it’s a beautiful refreshing drink.

Our favourite serves:

White Port & Tonic

For this you will need:

  • 50ml White Port

  • Top with ice

  • Add your favourite tonic (we like Fever Tree)

  • Lemon peel garnish

You can also use other citrus fruits to finish including fresh grapefruit or orange.

Sherry + Tonic

(Or the cleverly penned name She +T, as revived by production team member Charlotte Wilde at London wine bar, Sager + Wilde)

For this you will need:

  • Rocks glass or large bowl wine glass

  • 1 x large ice cube

  • 50ml Fino Sherry (any brand works well, the dryer the better. Tio Pepe is perfect!)

  • Top with Tonic (Slim line is less sweet)

  • Garnish with Grapefruit slice

Food Pairing: Sip your She + T whilst snacking on some lightly salted and oiled Marcona Almonds. Saúde!
